Bill Helin Art

Featuring the sacred "Crest Hummingbird" hand-burned design.

The Hummingbird: A Symbol of Joy & Healing

Adorning the hand-stitched vamp of this natural maple moosehide moccasin is the exquisite "Crest Hummingbird" artwork by renowned Tsimshian artist Bill Helin, burned directly into the premium leather.

"Inspired by profound tribal symbolism, the Hummingbird embodies the spirit of pure joy, deep healing, and love."

In many Indigenous cultures, particularly those of the Northwest Coast, the hummingbird is a cherished and revered symbol. Known for its incredible agility and swiftness, the hummingbird is often seen as a messenger of good news, love, and joy. Its unique ability to fly backward teaches us a powerful life lesson: we can look to our past, but we must never dwell there. Instead, the hummingbird encourages us to gracefully move forward, savor every sweet moment, and find happiness even in times of sorrow. When you wear these moccasins, you carry with you not just fine craftsmanship, but a symbol of healing, joy, and the enduring spirit of Northwest Coast Indigenous artistry.

Perfect Footwear Fit

Sizing & Fitting Wisdom

Because authentic Canadian leather stretches, finding your true size in Spirit Moccasins differs slightly from modern stiff department store footwear.

How do I determine my moccasin size?
To find your perfect, snug glove fit, use your standard street shoe size and follow our simple sizing rules:

Women's Sizing: If you wear a standard whole size, order your exact size. If you wear a half size (e.g., 7.5), order down to the nearest whole size (Size 7).
Men's Sizing: If you wear a standard whole size, order your exact size. If you wear a half size (e.g., 9.5), order up to the nearest whole size (Size 10).

Traditional Canadian leather has natural stretch and memory—it is designed to feel snug at first, but will adapt beautifully to your unique footprint within a few days of active wear.

If you are still unsure, use our interactive size chart located in the footer to help.
Should I wear them with or without socks?
Traditionally, moccasins are designed to be worn barefoot to enjoy the organic warmth of native furs and natural hides. However, they easily accommodate socks. If you plan to wear thick winter socks, please follow these guidelines:

If you wear a whole size: Stick to your standard whole size (the premium leather will naturally stretch and yield within a few days to comfortably accommodate the extra sock volume).
If you wear a half size: Order up to the next nearest whole size (for example, if you wear a size 7.5, order a Size 8).
Earthy Longevity

Caring for Your Moccasins

Respecting your moccasins ensures they remain a loyal companion for decades. Learn how to clean and care for traditional hides.

Can I wear my moccasins outdoors?
Most of our moccasins are built as soft-sole indoor footwear. Wearing them on gravel or concrete outdoors will accelerate wear on the sole. If you want outdoor wear, look for models specially fitted with durable crepe or rubber soles.
How do I safely clean suede or moosehide?
Never submerge traditional moccasins in water. Each natural material requires specific, mindful care:

For Moosehide & Grain Leather: Wipe away surface dirt with a soft, slightly damp cloth. You can occasionally use a small amount of high-quality saddle soap, but avoid heavy commercial chemical solvents.
For Suedes: Allow any mud or wet dirt to dry completely first. Then, gently brush clean using a dedicated suede brush to restore the soft, natural nap.
For Fur & Sheepskin Lining: Gently shake out dust and shake clean. Never apply liquid water or soaps directly to natural wild trims or wool linings.

If you are unsure how to care for your moccasins, visit our interactive Moccasin care guide in the footer.

Sustainable & Mindful Harvesting

By prioritizing natural, locally supplied Canadian hides and collaborating with Indigenous-owned workshops, we align our footwear footprint with traditional respect for animals and the preservation of the great Canadian outdoors.
